Brief Lives: the last word!
Our story could have begun much earlier. But we chose to begin with the visionary from Gloucestershire. who wanted to make sure even the plough boy could get hold of a copy of the Bible and read it in his own language: William Tyndale. We went on to tell of Penry, Barrow and Greenwood who gave their lives in the determination to shape their church life and worship according to their reading of the Bible. We told of John Robinson and the Pilgrim Mothers as well as the Pilgrim Fathers who longed for the freedom to shape the church by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
We spoke of Oliver Cromwell and John Owen and the struggle for that liberty of church life in the life of the nation. We told of John Bunyan and the years of imprisonment he faced as he simply wanted to preach the Gospel of Grace and make his ‘pilgrim’s progress’. And then there was Selina, Countess of Huntingdom, not to mention those pray-ers of the 1700’s who came together with a passion to spread the gospel in this country and across the world. There was John Williams who gave his life in the pursuit of that goal, David Livinstone the great pioneer Missionary and Alfred Sadd who died in the service of his Lord.
We told some of the stories of Highbury. Of John Burder and his vision for planting churches in the new towns of the UK and his part in setting up our church in its first premises on Grosvenor Street. We told of the social reformer and passionate preacher who has been the longest serving minister this church
