Highbury Home            -  20  -              Reports 2008
included grass sledging and tent pitching. The Guides also learnt how to light and cook on an open fire in the pouring rain! Our cheesy potatoes and ‘summores’ cooked very well.
On other occasions we have been climbing at The Warehouse in Gloucester, Ten pin bowling in Cheltenham, we have participated in the annual Swimarathon, and visited the BIG GIG pop concert at the NEC Birmingham.
Back at Highbury the patrols completed a number of ‘Go for it’ challenges, and one patrol achieved the Confectioners badge. We have also had some themed evenings throughout the year, including Pancakes, an Oscar evening, the Olympics, and a Chocolate evening (which was the most popular) where, as well as tasting different chocolates, we also learnt about Fair Trade.
We ended the year with a Christmas meal and entertainment evening for friends and family. The Guides prepared and served the food as well as providing the entertainment between courses. Everyone had an enjoyable time and we raised £45.00 for CLIC.
In 2009 we are looking forward to the start of special activities to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Guide movement from September onwards, as well as celebrating the 90th birthday of the Highbury Guide Unit.

Our Centenary year went very well. The first task was to design a Centenary badge and have it made up. After a competition for a design we had three interrelated badges made.
In March we launched our series of special events by unveiling a plaque on the original home of Highbury and the Scouts in Grosvenor Street. The actual unveiling was done by the daughter of one of the very first Scouts in Highbury Troop. After the unveiling we paraded to Church led by the original Group flag and had a celebratory service. Later that month we planted five trees in the Chapel area of the County Scout Campsite at Cranham.
In June we took over Cranham and had a day of fun and adventure, with activities, an exhibition of the history, a campfire and a BBQ. An updated version of the Group History was available including some new information about the earliest years of the Group. There were about 190 people present, including current members and their parents, past members and supporters and special guests. The presence of two Scouters from Poschiavo in Switzerland was a real delight. Their Scout Group was started in 1940 by a former leader from Highbury and member of Highbury Church, Alfonso Tosio.
During the year we were congratulated by the Chief Scout for having grown our leadership team. We have continued with this by welcoming Shiona Hastie to the Cub team.
