Worship

At the heart of our life together as a Church family is the worship we share. How important it is that we each bring something of ourselves to our services and take something of God with us into the week that lies ahead.

Sunday Worship at Highbury
That’s why our services are a mixture of all sorts of different things. There’s the opportunity to meet with friends who share the same faith and exchange news and concerns for prayer and practical support. There’s the opportunity to sing praise to God, and to use singing and music to state together the faith we believe - how valuable it is to have a wide range of musical experience which captures the timelessness of the faith and the contemporary relevance of all that we stand for. There’s the opportunity to be still and quiet in a place of worship and the opportunity to pray for our own needs and for the needs of others.

Listening out for God
We are there to listen out for God’s word for us and for our world. There’s a strong visual element in our morning worship as we explore themes that relate God’s word to the world and its problems.  Evening services are more reflective and are based on readings from the Revised Common Lectionary,  (See the Sunday readings on our home page.

Worship for All
Our morning service is an exciting mix of new and old, with favourite hymns and new worship songs led by a team of organists our own worship group, Hy-Spirit.  With a good number of families with young children the first part of the morning service includes Bible stories with young children in mind.  During the second part of the services parents of pre-school children have the opportunity to go into the porch where they can still see and hear the service but where there are toys, books and games to enjoy with their children.  Older children have a ‘Splash!’ Activity group to enjoy.  We try to make sure there really is something for everyone.

Evening Prayers
Our well-attended 6-30 service is a much quieter service, with time for reflection, favourite hymns and a focus on the Bible.  We use the prayer handbook prepared for the European Region of the Council for World Mission.  The readings we use are listed on our home page.  Its prayers and meditations link us with the world church.  The 2006 prayer handbook is called ‘Glory at Ground Level’.  We share in Communion on the first Sunday evening and the third Sunday morning of each month.

Access for All
There is easy access for those who use wheel chairs and people with mobility impairment.  We have a loop system in the church and in the hall.  Our use of the media projector during the morning service is particularly helpful for those who are deaf.   A braille version of our main hymn book is available.

Fish Club and Star People join together in worship
The Fish Club Service is a very special time of worship for under 5‘s, their families and friends.  It starts each Wednesday at 1-45 with 30 minutes of songs, Bible Stories, prayers and other lively activities in the church before the toddlers follow the sign of the fish to go and play for another half an hour in their own special space at the Front Door.  Star People meet at 3-30 on a Thursday afternoon for something to eat and for fun and games before going into church for their own special time of worship for half an hour at 4-00.

A Time for God’s People
We recognize that worship is a time for God’s people
¨
to come together in praise and offer thanks for God’s goodness
¨
to absorb the reality of His presence and saving grace
¨
to acknowledge our need of forgiveness and His help.
¨
to hear His Word and receive His enabling power to spread the Good News.
We regard worship as human activity at its loftiest. In our services we seek a spirit of participation, joy and reverence, enabling people who value different styles of worship to come together as one. We want to learn to appreciate what other people appreciate.
