Community

Highbury has always had a strong commitment to the local community. Since our recent extensive re-furbishment there is now safe and easy access to all parts of the building for people who have mobility problems. We have two spaces reserved for orange badge holders in the car-park and good, modern disabled toilet facilities. We encourage community groups to use our premises ... and they are well used throughout the week. We are host to Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Guides for younger people and to the Social Services Highbury Day Centre for older people. A great variety of caring groups, interest groups and social justice groups meet at Highbury.

Guides and Scouts

The 1st Cheltenham (Highbury) Scout Group is one of the oldest in Cheltenham: it was founded in 1908 only shortly after Scouting began.  Scouts meet on Mondays and Cubs on Wednesdays. The 11th Cheltenham Guides were founded in 1919  - Brownies meet on Tuesdays, and Guides on Fridays. They all join the church for Parade once each term. A number of church members are also active in the Trefoil Guild - the Scout Group Whist Drive is on Tuesday evenings.  You can find out more about Highbury’s Scout Group at www.highburyscouts.org.uk

Highbury Day Centre

Cheltenham’s main Social Services Day Centre for Elderly people has been meeting at Highbury for well over 25 years. It now meets on Thursdays and Fridays and each day sees about 20 people enjoying good company and lunch together. A good programme of varied activities means that a really worthwhile day is spent by all. Volunteer drivers are always needed to help transport people to and fro the Day Centre - for more information ring 581713.  Admission to the Day Centre is by referral only through a GP or Social Worker.

Care Groups

Highbury is host to a number of Cheltenham’s key care groups - the club for people who are blind meets on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month and is run by volunteers from the RNIB.  A Friendship Group for people with dementia and their carers meets monthly.  For a number of years Highbury has been host to what has become a very special service to mark World Alzheimer’s Day on 21st September each year. We are also host to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Interest Groups

Cheltenham’s horticultrualists and Cheltenham’s naturalists also meet regularly, as do Highbury’s own Lacemakers group. Other community groups use the premises on a regular basis, with classes for art, bridge and many other things too.
